The Scott-Free Scholarship Foundation’s
2012 Summer Camp Scholarship Application Season
Starting January 1st, 2012
PLEASE READ ALL INFORMATION
We are proud to announce that the application season for the Scott-Free 2012 Summer Camp Scholarships will start on January 1st, 2012.
As some of you may already know, The Scott-Free Scholarship Foundation is coming into its 5th year of providing full scholarships* to summer camp experiences for at-risk youth.
*(please note that transportation is NOT included)
Just to give you an overview of what we do, The Scott-Free Scholarship Foundation was founded in 2008 and has sent a total of 176 kids in the past four summer camp seasons. We send a wide scope of at-risk children to summer camps, both day camps and sleep-away camps. This wide scope encompasses children that have difficulties in their lives, such as having a parent endure a terminal illness or children residing at homeless shelters with their caregivers at one end of the spectrum. At the other end, we have children that have a good support system at home, but the parents are not able to have the extra monies to send their kids to camp. All in all, everyone of these kids have one common thread, they would not be able to attend summer camp because it would pose a financial hardship for their families. At the present moment, we have partnered with 22+ different camps (you can visit our website at www.scott-free.org to see all the specific camps we are involved with on our community page). These camps range from sports, science, math, arts, theater, wildlife adventures, cooking and music, etc.
The following is a general overview of the application process. When a child applies for a scholarship, our camper committee will review the pre-application to see if the child qualifies for the scholarship. Once qualified, the parent/caregivers will receive a full application for the scholarship. Afterwards. they will then be notified if their child has been considered for a scholarship award for a camp experience and what particular camp they will be awarded. The legal guardian then must complete a camp application to finish the process.
The Scott-Free Camper Committee will make the decision to send the child to a particular camp based on the interests that the child has (which are addressed in the application). There is no guarantee to attend a particular camp, but we do our best to place the child in a camp that the child will enjoy. We want the experience to be a very fulfilling one for the child. The age group Scott-Free accepts for new applicants are from 9 to 13 years old, or for the most part, kids that are rising 5th graders until the summer before high school. Once a child has been awarded a Scott-Free scholarship, that child is welcome to re-apply every summer until the summer before they attend college, granted that each child completes a required two essays and a community service. If they complete these 3 things, and still qualify for the scholarship under our guidelines, a child has the opportunity to attend camp for several years. We have a couple of our children that have been attending camp every summer since 2008.
We would like everyone interested in applying a child to our scholarships to be aware of the NEW DEADLINES instituted for the 2012 APPLICATION SEASON.
The application process involves 3 STEPS and 3 corresponding DEADLINES:
(1) PRE-APPLICATION:
-Will be accepted from JANUARY 1st, 2012 until MARCH 31st, 2012
-Pre-applications are found on our website at www.scott-free.org
-Pre-applications can be filled out by the child’s parents/caregivers OR by the child’s school counselor, teachers, social worker involved with the family, etc. with the expressed consent of the parent/caregiver (legal guardian)..
(2) FULL APPLICATION:
-Must be returned to Scott-Free by email or mailed with a postmark no later than
APRIL 30th, 2012
-The full application MUST only be filled out by the legal guardian.
(3) CAMP APPLICATION:
-Must be returned to Scott-Free by email or mailed with a postmark no later than the DUE DATE stated on the SCHOLARSHIP AWARD CONSIDERATION LETTER.
-The child’s legal guardian MUST fill out the Camp Application.
ALL APPLICATIONS are reviewed on a FIRST COME-FIRST SERVED BASIS. Therefore it is considerably beneficial to send your applications as soon as possible as scholarships are limited. For example, if we get 10 applicants that are highly interested in theater and we have only 5 spots at a theater camp, the five spots will be filled by the first 5 qualifying applicants that have filled all applications in a timely manner.
Please be aware that ALL APPLICATIONS must be completed IN FULL in order to be considered for a summer camp scholarship.
If a scholarship award consideration letter is mailed, the details of the specific camp experience will be included in this letter. A camp application will be also enclosed with the award letter. The legal guardian must then complete and mail the enclosed CAMP APPLICATION. By doing so, the legal guardian will then have accepted the specified awarded camp experience for their child. If the camp application is not submitted by the due date, Scott-Free will assume that the award has been forfeited by the legal guardian.
If you, the parent or caregiver have any questions or concerns about the application process please contact the Camper Committee Director, Leigh White, at leigh@scott-free.org
We at The Scott-Free Scholarship Foundation look forward to sending another great group of children to the enriching experiences of summer camp life!
