Volunteer Opportunities for Returning Campers

At Scott-Free, we know many of our campers want to stay connected to community service throughout the year. Below are some great volunteer opportunities in the Triangle area where youth and families can give back, learn new skills, and have fun together.

🐾 Safe Haven for Cats - Animal Shelter

  • Type: No-kill cat shelter

  • Ages: 16+ may volunteer independently; under 16 can help alongside a parent/guardian with age-appropriate tasks (cleaning, stocking, reading to cats)

  • Schedule: Daily shifts (including weekend mornings) for cat care and cleaning; monthly Pet Food Pantry volunteer days

  • How to Join: Complete the Youth Volunteer Application on the Safe Haven Youth Volunteering page and attend a short orientation/training before signing up for shifts

🌍 Activate Good - Youth Volunteer Corps (Greater Triangle)

  • Type: Teen Volunteer Club (various causes: environment, hunger relief, etc.)

  • Ages: 11–18 (projects are designed for teens; events are supervised by staff so teens can attend without a parent)

  • Schedule: Flexible! Monthly project list includes weekend, after-school, and school-break opportunities. No minimum commitment—pick what works for you.

  • How to Join: Register once online with a parent/guardian at activategood.org. After signing up, you’ll receive emails with upcoming projects and can sign up for specific events through their volunteer portal.

🥦 TABLE (Carrboro) - Hunger Relief for Children

  • Type: Food distribution & nutrition education for local kids

  • Ages: All ages welcome! Families can participate together. Younger children can decorate food bags or harvest produce with close supervision.

  • Schedule:

    • Food packing: Weekday afternoons/evenings during the school year

    • Family workdays: Occasional weekends for garden and special projects

  • How to Join: Visit tablenc.org/get-involved to see current volunteer needs. You can sign up for a food packing shift as an individual, family, or group.

⚾ Miracle League of Johnston County - Baseball Buddies

  • Type: Adaptive sports program for athletes with special needs

  • Ages: Volunteers 12+ can serve as a “buddy,” paired one-on-one with athletes to help them play and learn baseball.

  • Schedule: Seasonal games and practices (see their website for details)

  • How to Join: Learn more and register at miracleleaguejc.com/get-involved

Why Volunteer?

Volunteering is a way to continue living the Scott-Free spirit year-round—serving others, building community, and creating lasting friendships. These programs are perfect for campers who want to stay engaged, earn service hours, or simply make a difference.
